Can you help? – a request from the villlage archivist.

Village Celebrations of Royal Jubilees and Anniversaries

As a lead in to the, hoped for, platinum jubilee celebrations next June I am planning a series of articles for “The Hill” on past celebrations of such events and, dependent upon the venue of the celebrations next year, I shall also put together a display of material for you to see and read on the day. As I work through the events I am hoping to compile a booklet to include copies of posters, programmes, memorabilia etc concluding with the platinum jubilee and will make this available to read on and download from the village web site in due course.

Some help please:

  • Celebration medals were given to all school children at the Silver Jubilee in 1977 and the Diamond Jubilee in 2012. Does anyone have such medals from either or both occasions that I may borrow and photograph. Thanks.

  • At the moment I am pulling together various paper and digital files into some semblance of order and have discovered a large gap in the archive records. In 2013, in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the coronation, a cricket match was arranged between the Baker Arms and the Saxon for the “Manor Cup” supported by a number of stalls etc. The success of this event led to the re-establishment of the annual Hey Day the following year

On the day in 2013 a village photographer snapped away and the photographs were made available on the village web site. Unfortunately the photographer tells me he no longer has any files of the occasion and when the web site was superceded that record also vanished. Does anyone have any photos of that event that they would let me borrow and scan? I would hate to think we have lost forever the picture of Peter Turner, landlord of the Saxon, striding to the wicket in his “suit of armour” aka “a frock”; a costume that won him first prize in the fancy dress competition. Please have a browse through your albums and files and let me know.

  • I have also found very little about any coronation celebrations in 1953; just one item from the parish council minutes setting up a committee; and a short entry in the millennium book “Child Okeford: A Dorset Village”. Indeed I know more about the celebration of Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee in 1887. Does anyone have any relevant newspaper cuttings?

All help much appreciated.
